"Besides its not like we don't have to get licenses to drive a car or own a gun. Should use of the internet be monitored at a lower level than these things? "

Yes! You can't kill or harm anyone by using the internet.

"It seems like bad people can do as much damage with a mouse click as they can with a car or gun."

huh?

I agree with Arb.

Next thing you know they'll want to put a chip in your arm. For national security of course.

No need to install a chip. People voluntarily carry smart phones. Who they are and where they are is already easily tracked. The more we use these devices the more our daily activities become knowable.

Stop and think about just how much of your life is exposed through the use of a smart phone. Not to mention social networks.

Anonymity and privacy are becoming rare and precious commodities. I'm hanging on to mine.....

More than 10 million people are victims of identity theft, totaling more than a half a billion dollars a year. Children have been harmed by predators using social networking sites on the internet. Terrorist groups, hate groups, vegans, and other assorted slime have reached epic proportions through the net, and use it as a way to organize their followers to commit atrocities.

not buying into cyber bullying, id theft, or other forms of cyber terrorism? Many would argue they are pretty harmful and can lead to deaths.

Last I checked computers aren't classified as weapons. They can be used to control weapons but the internet is not a weapon in itself. I'm pretty sure that no one can go on the internet, push a button, and have someone hurt or killed directly. I find it hard to believe that I have to argue about the differece between the deadliness of a gun or a car versus the internet. TRON is a fictional movie people!

Guns and cars can't kill people either. Only when they are under the control of operators who have the intent to kill or don't understand how to use them because they are too young, intoxicated or incompetent do they become lethal. I think the point of all this is that people are using the internet as a weapon, not to directly kill people but to coordinate efforts that can lead to theft and even death. I believe it is also illegal to plan or conspire to kill. I guess you believe that the internet had nothing to do with the Craigslist killer's MO? Perhaps that woman would still be alive if they could have come up with a suspect list that included the identity of internet users after the first girl was robbed at gunpoint. And then there is all that id theft and other crap that is going on that is also illegal in the real world like identity theft.

I can live with the gov't knowing i used a couple gift card yesterday to purchase studio releases from RRE, Yarn and the CCD if it means they have a system to deter someone from stealing my identity or trying to seduce my teenage son.

You've said it well.

'Cus seriously the government doesn't care what you used your gift cards for anyway.
